The most typical and popular material for chef coats. It is possible to make a very comfortable material by using a blend while still producing an inexpensive coat. A 65: 35 ratio of poly to cotton is probably seen most often, that is specially designed to be soil resistant and easily cleaned but other blends such as 80: 20, can be found as well.

High end chef coats are generally made out of 100% cotton. The reason is obvious: organic cotton is the most comfortable material. Of course, there are different types of cotton, and for a chef looking for the best in comfort, the materials of choice would be 100% Egyptian cotton. This type of cotton differs from other cotton because it has the longest fibers. This produces a much smoother, more luxurious weave.

Most chef coats have a fabric weight specified in ounces. The official fabric weight refers to how much a specific amount of that fabric weighs. Normally, the measurement is in ounces per square yard. You can thus reasonably compare the heaviness of various chef coats by comparing their stated weight. Do you want a heavy coat or a light coat? It depends on what’s most important to you- durability or coolness. Heavier coats will, all else being equal, normally last longer. But the price of that durability is a coat that feels heavier and, probably, hotter.

One way some manufacturers have attempted to create a cool, comfortable coat is by adding mesh to a section of it. This allows air to circulate better through the coat and lets your body warmth escape. Certainly, there is a limit to the amount of mesh can possibly be used, as most chefs don’t want a see-through coat.
